Convergence of Reading and Education
Library's role is expanding to support public education for youth and be a place of re-socialization for seniors beyond just as a housing for books. Library is not 'Reading room', it's place of creative education combined with books. As the New York Public Library have played a role as a supporting center of foundation and finding a job for citizen of NY, good library is a energetic place that people can think, meet, learn and ultimately practice what they learned through book. In this point, Mapo central library and Education center that active reading and education programs are provided at the same place with same size have to be planned to make both kinds of programs which are reading and education can create synergy effect.
Library and Education Center Complex
Group Information commons which relatively has high possibility of combining with education activity among library programs with job experience and English education program of Education center to one section. By actively searching and reading multimedia data with digital media and stimulate to use it for education, makes the act of reading more than just silent reading and stops one-sided education. To provide active searching, reading and education at one same place, bring digital media, lecture and experience activities to the central area of entire building. Through this way, spatial structure that creates maximum synergy of library and education center can be suggested.
독서와 교육의 융합
도서관은 단순히 책의 집을 넘어 청소년을 위한 공교육을 지원하고 시니어를 위한 ‘재사회화의 장’으로서 그 역할이 확대되고 있다. 도서관은 ‘독서실’이 아니고, 책과 결합된 창의적 교육의 장이다. 뉴욕 공공도서관이 시민의 취업과 창업센터의 기능을 해온 사례처럼 좋은 도서관은 시민이 책을 통해 생각하고 만남을 통해 배우며 궁극적으로 배움을 실천해보는 활동적인 장소이다. 이런 의미에서 능동적인 독서와 교육프로그램이 같은 크기로 같은 장소에서 제공되는 ‘마포중앙도서관/청소년 교육센터’는 독서와 교욱 두가지 프로그램이 시너지를 일으키도록 계획되어야 한다.
도서관과 교육센터 공간의 융합
도서관의 프로그램 중 상대적으로 교육 활동과 결합될 가능성이 높은 인포메이션 커먼스(Information Commons)를 교육센터 프로그램 중 직업체험/ 영어 교육 등과 하나의 영역으로 묶는다. 디지털 매체를 통해 능동적으로 멀티미디어 자료를 검색, 구독하고 이를 교육에 활용하도록 자극함으로써 독서가 묵독에 그치지 않고, 교육이 일방적이지 않도록 한다. 능동적인 검색, 독서, 교육이 한 공간에서 이루어질 수 있도록 디지털 미디어, 강의, 체험 활동 등이 한자리에 모일 수 있도록 건물 전체의 중심 공간을 설정함으로써 도서관과 교육센터의 시너지가 극대화되는 공간구조를 제안한다.
