Introduction

Nodeul Island consists of two disconnected parts, with cultural facilities on the west and natural elements on the east. The Nodeul Forest on the east is often overlooked, as visitors tend to stay in the facility-rich Nodeul Yard on the west. This isolation restricts the Han River experience and diminishes the island’s potential. The elements connecting the ground and foundation are limited to only 4 locations along the 2-kilometer circumference of the island. This factor isolates much of the island's interior, disconnecting it from the waterfront spaces.

The "Nodeul Promenade Ring" is a project designed to overcome the fragmented conditions of the island, divided into east and west, and upper and lower levels. It aims to reconstruct Nodeul Island as a unified entity by proposing a circulatory loop. This project minimizes the damage to existing facilities and nature while enhancing connectivity, creating a space where culture and nature are more closely linked, and providing all areas of the island as a public park for citizen relaxation without exclusion.

The first major strategy for Nodeul Island is to propose the Promenade Ring, a pedestrian system that strongly connects and integrates the east and west banks of the island. This is a kind of pedestrian highway that reaches all parts of the island and alleviates isolation. The Promenade Ring not only connects the east and west but also allows pedestrians crossing the Hangang Bridge to immediately join this loop at the entrance of the island. As soon as pedestrians enter the island, they are given the option to move anywhere on the island.

The project proposes a program band that combines all architectural elements such as Promenade Rings, viewpoints, and exhibition spaces at the boundary of the island, allowing walking, lingering, engaging, and enjoying. It avoids fragmenting the experience within Nodeul Island and creates a variety of sensory layers. The Promenade Ring is a structure where cantilevers supporting pedestrian pathways are anchored to the retaining walls, minimizing disruption to the natural terrain of the existing island while creating new pedestrian areas that are closer to nature.

Planters are built on the foundation of a low embankment to extend the forest, the river bank is extended to contain sand and water, and a new boundary is created above the water to embrace the aquatic biotope. The existing Nodeul Island, which was a mass of concrete retaining walls, will be returned to a container containing the nature of the forest and river.

In summary, the primary goal of the "Nodeul Promenade Ring" is to enhance the island's advantage of connecting with the river in all 360 degrees. By placing diverse park elements along the island's perimeter, it provides visitors with rich outdoor experiences. The project proposes an ecological urban park where the Yongsan International Business District, Yeouido skyline, western sunsets, and eastern horizons overlap with the various experiences around the park, integrating distant and near views, as well as visual and tactile senses. The Promenade Ring, which connects the top and bottom of Nodeul Island, is expected to become a part of the new Han River Walking Journey, a three-dimensional experience of the Han River. A collection of various small parks along the perimeter of Nodeul Island could become a new destination in Hangang Park.
