Reading Art in between the Architecture and Furniture started from the idea of linking the seven public libraries in Anyang through “artistic reading.” With its history spanning almost a decade, APAP seeks to utilize the network of Anyang’s public libraries as a tool for recording and re-reading the public art-related assets that the city has accumulated over the years. By proposing a new way of reading in the form of “reading art” or “artistic reading,” the initiative hopes to expand the territory of public art to include the most universal of public spaces — the library.
“Why are you reading books instead of studying?” Such thinking underlies the existing library culture where the library is still considered to be a place for studying. However, reading does not just involve an interaction between the human eye and the printed letter; when we read, our body responds to diverse media within a space. By intervening in the space of public libraries, public art may expand our perception of books, reading, and the library itself, and serve as a means to amplify the joy of reading by making it become a more malleable, flexible, and pleasurable spatial experience.
Reading Art in between the Architecture and Furniture is installed at the General Reference Section (2nd floor) of Seoksu Public Library, Anyang, and will run from December, 2013 till December, 2014. Shelved in the work are 100 books, curated by the architects and donated to Seoksu Library by Park Library. Users who have library cards for Anyang City Public Libraries can borrow the books.
‹예술을 읽는 가구와 공간 사이›는 안양의 7개 공공 도서관을 ‘예술적인 독서’로 연결하고자 하는 아이디어에서 출발한다. 안양공공예술프로젝트의 공공예술 자산이 10년에 가까워 지는 시점에서 이를 기록하고 다시 읽어내는 도구로서 안양의 공공 도서관 네트워크를 활용하고자 한다. 예술 읽기, 혹은 예술적 책읽기라는 새로운 독서의 양식을 제안함으로써 공공예술의 영역을 가장 보편적 공공장소인 도서관에까지 확장하기 위함이다.
“너 왜 공부 안하고 책 읽니?”라고 핀잔하는 기존 도서관 문화의 저변에서 여전히 도서관은 ‘공부하는’ 독서실이다. 하지만 독서는 단지 눈과 활자 사이의 상호작용이 아닌, 다양한 미디어가 공간 속 신체와 반응하는 방식으로 이해될 수도 있다. 도서관에 개입하는 공공예술은 책과 독서, 그리고 도서관이라는 공간에 관한 인식의 확장을 유발하고, 좀더 부드럽고 유연하며 즐거운 공간적인 경험으로 책읽기의 즐거움을 증폭시키는 장치가 될 것이다.
‹예술을 읽는 가구와 공간 사이›는 안양시립 석수도서관 2층 종합자료실에 2013년 12월부터 2014년 12월까지, 1년간 설치된다. 작품에는 SoA가 선정하고, 공원도서관에서 석수도서관에 기증한 100권의 책이 포함되어 있다. 안양시립도서관 도서대출 회원증이 있는 이용객들은 본 도서들을 대출할 수 있다.
