Introduction

The 20th-anniversary exhibition of the Arumjigi Culture Keepers Foundation took place in F1963 Busan, which is a renovated building that was previously an industrial wire production factory transformed into a cultural space. Arumjigi, as a foundation focusing on caring for the heritage of Korea, has been holding annual exhibitions exploring the possibilities of traditional clothing, food, and housing. The special 20th-anniversary exhibition was more like a retrospective, reflecting on the journey they have taken so far. We took notice of the fact that they exhibited over 400 handcrafted works accumulated over 20 years in a former factory where mass production of industrial materials took place. We pondered how to showcase the uniqueness of these one-of-a-kind exhibits within an industrial and standardized environment.

To highlight the handcrafted nature of the exhibits, materials such as stainless steel, MDF, and ceramic panels were used in nearly their original sizes as commercial products. The wires produced in the former factory were woven into curtains, serving as partitions. In alignment with the exhibition's title, 'CONNECTING,' we juxtaposed materials and production methods to create an interplay of two contrasting situations. The factory's spacious area was loosely divided using low ceilings, platforms on the floor, and lightweight elements like wire curtains. In doing so, we aimed to create a subdued yet not humble, vibrant yet not extravagant ambiance, reminiscent of the original exhibition title. Our vision was to craft a quietly radiant stage, akin to stars, where each artwork's story would sparkle, showcasing the uniqueness of the individual exhibits amidst the industrial and standardized setting.
