LG Electronics’ flagship D5 is a project that renovated the exterior of a home appliance store that had long been located at Hakdong Intersection, a well-known area in the Gangnam district of Seoul. Along with the advancement of AI technology, LG Electronics also aimed to present a new space that reflects a renewed product value known as "empathic intelligence," transitioning from a traditional home appliance company. Rather than simply showcasing technology, the project aimed to increase the transparency of the atrium, allowing the interior to be visible to the city, and the light flowing along the terracotta surface was designed to function as media art in the urban environment. In particular, terracotta is a building material that humanity has used for thousands of years, made by firing clay extracted from the earth, and it carries a sense of primality. It was an attempt to create a new light effect by combining the earth, the origin of the material world, and the artificial light created by LG Electronics' technology—something never seen before.
The new curtain wall was structurally designed with solid columns 10cm in diameter to lightly support the massive 5-meter-high glass. To achieve a manufacturing tolerance of less than 1mm, the project employed the best built-up steel frame fabrication technology in the country, and the glass used was of the highest level of transparency and smoothness achievable in the construction industry. The entire design process focused on the technical effort required to realize architecture that resembled the perfection of the product. Additionally, through R&D, dry construction methods were developed to minimize allowable tolerances, and precise results were sought by closely collaborating with the workers involved in the construction process.
